European Union. The Joint Research Centre publishes a review assessing the performance of energy technologies

The Institute of Energy of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) recently published a review comparing different energy technologies that are currently used for power generation, heating and transport.

The JRC review compares energy sources, production costs and performance for a total of 33 technologies. It is based on different fuel price scenarios, so as to calculate variations in the future price of energy. Therefore, the report provides information regarding both the current situation in energy markets, as well as their expected evolution in the future.

The JRC review is part of the broader Strategic Energy Review presented by the European Commission. The Strategic Energy Review proposes a series of measures to address future challenges in this sector, including climate change, as well as a new EU Energy Security and Solidarity Action Plan which identifies 5 areas where more work is needed in order to ensure more secure and sustainable energy sources for the future of Europe. The Commission plans aim to achieve greater solidarity among Member States on energy matters and new policy in order to stimulate investment in low-carbon energy networks.
