The Council could not agree on Community patent regulation but reached agreement on the issue of patentability of computer-implemented inventions

At its 2583rd meeting on 17-18 May 2004, the Council of the European Union (Competitiveness) again failed to reach an agreement on the Community patent, the main subject of discordance remaining regarding the translation of Community patent applications.

The Council now intends to refer the matter to the President of the European Council, but after this new failure, the European Commission is also contemplating the possibility of withdrawing its proposition for a Regulation on the Community patent.

During this meeting, the Council adopted a political agreement on the proposal for a Directive on the patentability of computer-implemented inventions.
