The EPO restricts the famous "Oncomouse/Harvard" patent

The "Oncomouse/Harvard" patent, European patent that protects the method for producing transgenic animals and was the first to be granted by the European Patent Office (EPO) for a transgenic animal, was recently restricted to the "transgenic mice" by a Technical Board of Appeal of the EPO.

This patent is particularly appropriate for use in cancer research since it concerns a mouse genetically modified to develop cancer. It was already restricted in 2001 following an opposition procedure filed against it by several associations (restricted from "transgenic non-human mammalian animals" to "transgenic rodents").
