The Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs) has recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. The OHIM, a Community agency specialising in the registration of intellectual property rights, began its activities in 1994. I would like to mention two facts which most stand out in my mind from these ten years. On the one hand, the OHIM has received 425,000 Community trade mark applications, confirming that this intellectual property right is an essential element of the competition system that the European Union Treaty aims to establish and maintain.
